The Biology Behind Anti-Aging Supplements

Share

Some friends asked me about an anti-aging supplement called Basis by Elysium Health. This prompted me to look into the biology behind the two “active” ingredients in this and other anti-aging dietary supplements. The compounds are nicotinamide riboside and pterostilbene. Pterostilbene is chemically related to resveratrol; both are bioactive components found in certain berries, grapes, and red wine. Nicotinamide riboside is a precursor of the molecule NAD. As with most things, moderation and balance are likely the best approach. For people with medical conditions, especially those taking medications, at least one of the classes of compounds could be problematic, because these compounds can alter metabolism of medications.

My research did not convince me that the fountain (or pill) of youth has been found. Read more to decide for yourself.
