Career Training: Scientific Writing for Diverse Audiences

Share

In this course, students work in pairs to summarize a published article, perform peer editing, and produce a 250-word high-level summary, a 500-word press release style summary, a one-sentence summary, and short “tweet”-length highlight. The instructor assigns articles based on the education and expertise of the students. The course includes two lectures: “Writing Tips” and “Communicating Science to Different Audiences.” The students each write a 250-word summary of the article using a provided template. The student pairs then exchange summaries and edit each other’s summary following the guidelines presented in the lectures.  Students revise their short summaries and submit them to the instructor. The students then write longer summaries in the format of a press release, peer edit each other’s summaries, and revise the press releases before submitting them to the instructor. The final assignment is writing a one-sentence summary and a short highlight. Students receive edited versions of both summaries from the instructor and assemble a document containing all four parts.
